What is a BOP? A Blowout Preventer (BOP) is an important piece of equipment used in well operations in the oil and gas industry to prevent uncontrolled releases of crude oil or natural gas from the wellbore. BOPs ensure that pressure control is maintained during drilling, well completion and well intervention operations. Basically, the main function of a BOP is to seal the well when there is an unexpected increase in pressure from the geological formations more than the wellbore pressure. TYPES

Blowout preventer (BOP): is a specialized valve or similar mechanical device, used to seal, control and monitor oil and gas wells to prevent blowouts, the uncontrolled release of crude oil or natural gas from a well. They are usually installed in stacks of other valves. Blowout preventer were developed to cope with extreme erratic pressures and uncontrolled flow (formation kick) emanating from a well reservoir during drilling. Kicks can lead to a potentially catastrophic event known as a blowout
